「estrangement」は、親しかった家族・友人・配偶者などの関係が悪化したり、気持ちが離れたりして、疎遠になった状態を表す名詞。長く連絡を取らないことだけでなく、不和や感情的な断絶を含むこともある。

estrangement は estrange＋-ment で、「よそ者にすること」が元の形です。estrange は古フランス語を経てラテン語 extraneus（外の、異質な）にさかのぼり、extra（外に）が核なので、「心が外へ離れる」感覚から「疎外」になります。関連語は strange, stranger。
