awkwardness は awkward + -ness で、awkward は中英語で「向きが悪い・ぎこちない」。awk は古ノルド語系の「逆向き」、-ward は「…の方向へ」なので、物や動きがうまくかみ合わない感じから「厄介さ」になった。関連語は backward, wayward。

Awkward in Middle English seems to have meant something like "turned the wrong way," with a first part linked to Old Norse ideas of being backward or reversed, and -ward meaning "in the direction of."
