confucianism は、中国語の孔夫子（孔子）を宣教師がラテン語化した Confucius に、形容詞語尾 -an と「主義」を表す -ism が付いた語。Confucian や neo-Confucianism も同系で、「孔子に由来する考え方の体系」と分かると儒教の意味に納得しやすい。
Confucianism comes from Confucius, the Latinized name used by missionaries for the Chinese teacher Kong Fuzi, or Kongzi. English then added -an and -ism to form the name of the system of thought associated with him. Related forms include Confucian and neo-Confucianism.
