中心性とは、あるものが中心的な位置や重要性を持つという性質や程度を表します。社会的なネットワークにおいて中心的な役割の度合いを示す概念です。
Centrality means the state of being central, important, or strongly connected within a system, idea, or place. It can be used in general writing for importance, and in technical fields it can describe how central something is in a network or structure.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず central が分かればかなり楽です。center（中心）→ central（中心の）→ centrality（中心である度合い）と一段ずつ広げて覚えると定着しやすい語です。-ity は「性質・程度」を名詞化する語尾なので、similarity, stability などと同じ型だと見るとよいです。単なる center「中心そのもの」と違い、centrality は「どれだけ中心的か」という抽象的な尺度を表します。特に network centrality のように、ネットワーク分析で node の重要度を測る場面で出やすいと押さえると記憶に残ります。

centrality は central「中心の」＋ -ity「性質・状態」から成り、central はラテン語 centrum、さらにギリシャ語 kentron「鋭い先・円の中心点」にさかのぼります。関連語に center, centralize があり、もとは「円を定める一点」なので、「どれほど中心にあるか」という中心性の意味になります。
Centrality comes from central plus the suffix -ity, meaning a state or quality. Central goes back through Latin centrum to Greek kentron, which meant a sharp point and also the center point of a circle. From that idea of a fixed middle point, the word developed the sense of how central something is; related words include center and centralize.
