覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず relevant「関連のある」を軸に覚えると整理しやすいです。relevant information なら「関係ある情報」。そこに否定の ir- が付くと irrelevant「無関係な」、さらに名詞化の -ance で irrelevance「無関係であること」になります。relevance / irrelevance の対で並べると定着しやすいです。会議や議論で That point has no relevance. のように「その点は関係ない」と使う場面を思い浮かべると、importance ではなく“関連性の有無”を表す語だと区別できます。
Use `relevant` as your base word. Add `ir-` to make `irrelevant`, then `-ance` to turn it into the noun `irrelevance`. Remember the pair `relevance / irrelevance` so you connect it with relation, not importance.

irrelevance の語源・成り立ち Etymology
irrelevance は否定の ir-、relevant、名詞語尾 -ance から成り、relevant はラテン語 relevare「持ち上げる・助ける」に由来します。話題に『持ち上げて結びつける』ものが relevance で、それを打ち消して「関係がないこと」になりました。関連語は relevant, relieve です。
Irrelevance is built from ir- "not," relevance, and the noun ending -ance. Relevant comes from Latin relevare, meaning "to raise up" or "help," and the idea later became "connected to the matter at hand." Irrelevance therefore developed as the state of not being connected or not mattering to the topic. Related words include relevant and relieve.
