Relevance is the quality of being closely connected to a subject or situation. It is used when talking about how useful or important something is to the matter being discussed. If something has little relevance, it does not relate much to the topic.

まず relevant を知っていると覚えやすい語です。relevant information で「関係ある情報」、そこから relevance は「関係があること・どれだけ当てはまるか」という名詞になります。会話や文章では the relevance of A to B、of relevance to ... の形が頻出。important と違って「重要か」ではなく「今の話題にちゃんと関係しているか」を見る語だと押さえると、意味がぶれません。irrelevant との対比でも定着します。

relevance は relevant + -ence。relevant は中世ラテン語 relevare「持ち上げる・浮かばせる」に由来し、re-「再び」+ levare「持ち上げる」からできた。relief や elevate も近縁で、『話題の中で浮かび上がるもの』が「関連性」になった。
Relevance comes from relevant + the noun ending -ence. Relevant goes back through Medieval Latin to relevare, meaning "to raise" or "lift up," from re- + levare. The idea seems to have shifted toward something that "stands out" or is "brought up" in relation to a topic. Related English words include relief and elevate.
