relevant は中世ラテン語 relevans に由来し、語源は relevare（re-「再び」+ levare「持ち上げる」）です。もともと「持ち上げて目立たせる」が転じて「話題に関わってくる」となり、「関連する」の意味になりました。関連語は relieve, leverage。
