relieve は古フランス語 relever を経て、ラテン語 relevare にさかのぼる語で、re-「再び・後ろへ」+ levare「持ち上げる」から成ります。重荷を持ち上げてどける感覚が核なので、「苦痛を和らげる」という意味になり、関連語に elevate があります。
Relieve came through Old French relever from Latin relevare. It is formed from re- and levare, "to raise" or "lift," and the original image is lifting a burden away. From that idea, the word developed the sense of making pain, pressure, or trouble less severe; compare elevate.
