testing は動詞 test に名詞化の -ing が付いた語です。test は古フランス語を経てラテン語 testa「土器・るつぼ」にさかのぼり、金属をるつぼで試すことから「試験」の意味になりました。関連語は test, tester。
Testing is the noun form of test with the ending -ing. Test came through French from Latin testa, meaning an earthen pot or crucible. Because metals were tried in a crucible, the word developed the sense of examining or proving something. From that history, testing came to mean the act or process of trying something out.
