tester は test + -er で、「試す人・試す道具」という作りです。test は古フランス語 test、さらにラテン語 testum「土器・るつぼ」に由来し、もとは金属をるつぼで確かめることでした。関連語は test, retest で、「試して見極める」感覚がそのまま残ります。
"Tester" is built from "test" and the suffix -er, meaning a person or thing that tests. "Test" came through Old French from Latin testum, a word for an earthen pot or crucible. It first referred to checking metals in a crucible, then widened to the general idea of trying something to judge it, as in "test" and "retest."
