種子の外側を覆う硬い保護層。種子の発芽を保護し、環境からのダメージから守る役割を果たします。
Testa is the outer covering of a seed. It protects the inside of the seed and is mainly used as a scientific or botanical term.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
testa は日常語ではなく植物学の語なので、まず seed coat「種の殻・外皮」と結びつけて覚えるのが近道です。見たら「種の中身そのものではなく、外側で守る硬い層」と固定するとぶれません。発芽前の種を包んで保護する場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすいです。似た説明で出る tegmen は内側寄りの層、testa は外側と対比すると区別しやすく、cover, protect, outer layer という語群と一緒に覚えると忘れにくくなります。

testaはラテン語testa「土器の殻・硬い外皮」に由来する。もともと「焼き物の殻」の語が、種の中身を包む硬い皮にたとえられ、植物学で「種皮」を指すようになった。関連語はtestaceous、フランス語tête。
Testa comes from Latin testa, meaning a shell, potsherd, or hard outer covering. A word once used for a piece of baked clay was later applied by comparison to the hard outer coat around a seed. The same root appears in testaceous, and it is also related historically to French tete.
