opossum は北米先住民のヴァージニア・アルゴンキン語系 apasum／opassum に由来し、「白い動物」「白い犬」に近い語とされます。短縮形 possum も同根で、見た目の印象から名づけられた語だと知ると動物名として覚えやすいです。
