力や原因を考慮せず、物体の運動そのものを幾何学的に研究する力学の一分野。
Kinematics is the study of motion, such as speed, direction, and position, without focusing on the forces that cause it. It is a branch of physics and mechanics. The word is mostly used in scientific and technical contexts.

kinetic（運動の）を知っていると入りやすい語。語尾の -ics は mathematics, physics のように「学問分野」を作る形なので、kinematics で「動きに関する学問」とまず取れる。中身は speed, velocity, position, trajectory など、物体がどう動いたかを記述する側。対比は dynamics で、こちらは force など原因まで扱う。motion の観察が kinematics、原因分析が dynamics、とセットで覚えると強い。

kinematics はギリシャ語 kinein『動かす』に由来する kinema『運動』からできた語で、kin-『動き』+ -matics『学問』と見られる。力の原因でなく動きそのものを扱うので、cinema や kinetic と同じく『動き』が芯にある。
