travail は古フランス語 travail「苦痛・骨折り」からで、さらに俗ラテン語 tripalium（3本杭の拷問具）にさかのぼります。『苦しめるもの』が『つらい労苦』を経て出産の苦しみ＝陣痛となり、関連語に travel があります。
Travail came into English from Old French travail, meaning hard effort, suffering, or torment. It goes back further to Late Latin tripalium, the name of a three-stake instrument of torture. Because of that history, the word moved from the idea of pain and torment to severe labor, and then especially to the pains of childbirth. Travel is historically related.
