travellerはtravelに「〜する人」の-erが付いた語。travelは古フランス語travailler、さらに後期ラテン語tripaliareに由来し、もとは『苦しめる・骨折らせる』意だった。昔の旅は難行だったため、『苦労して移動する人』から旅行者の意味になり、関連語はtravail。
Traveller is formed in English from travel + -er, meaning "a person who travels." Travel came through Old French travailler and goes back to Late Latin tripaliare, which originally meant "to torture" or "cause pain." Because journeys were once hard and tiring, the word shifted from suffering and labor to difficult movement, and then to travel in general. A related English word is travail.
