ラテン語 residens（とどまる者）から。re-（後ろに）+ sedere（座る）が語根で、「座り続ける人」が原義。reside（居住する）や sediment（沈殿物＝座ったもの）と同根。その場に腰を据える人が「居住者」になった。
Resident comes from Latin residens, meaning "remaining" or "staying in a place." It is built from re- and sedere, "to sit," so the older image is of someone who sits or stays settled somewhere. From that, it came to mean a person who lives in a place. Reside and sediment come from the same root.
