見つからないものを探し求めること。必要なものを捜すこと。
To try to find someone or something by searching. It is commonly used for lost objects, people, or information. This phrase focuses on the action of searching, so it does not mean you have found it yet.

look は「見る」、for は「〜を求めて・目当てに」の感覚。合わせると look for は「目当てのものに目を向ける」から「探す」。find が「見つける」という結果、look for は「まだ見つかっていないものを探している途中」の語。I’m looking for my keys. や look for a job / information の形でよく出る。look at は単に「見る」、search for はもっと念入りに捜索する感じ。
Think of `look for` as `look` plus `for`, where `for` gives the feeling of wanting or trying to get something. That makes it different from `find`: `look for` is the process, `find` is the result. Compare it with `look at`, which only means to direct your eyes at something.

look は古英語 locian「目を向ける」、for は古英語 for「前へ・求めて」がもとです。look for は、ただ見るのでなく視線を前へ送りながら対象を追う感覚で、「探す」になる。lookout や overlook にも同じ語根が残ります。
