encourage は古フランス語 encoragier に由来し、en-「中へ・与える」＋ courage「心・勇気」の組み合わせです。courage はラテン語 cor「心」にさかのぼり、cordial も同根。つまり『相手の心に勇気を入れる』が原義なので、『励ます』の意味がよく見えます。
