解説 Definition
美術品や作品を展示する建物、または劇場や競技場の観客席のこと。人々が芸術や催しを見に集まる場所を指します。
A gallery is a place where works of art are shown to the public. It can also mean a long room or area used for displaying objects. The word is common in art, museums, and sometimes online collections of images.

gallery は古フランス語 galerie を経て英語に入り、さらに中世ラテン語 galeria にさかのぼりますが、その先は不詳です。もとは「細長い回廊・通路」で、そこから絵を並べて見せる空間の意味へ広がりました。関連語に galleria があります。
"Gallery" entered English from Old French galerie, which came from Medieval Latin galeria. Its deeper origin is uncertain. It first meant a long covered passage or corridor, and later it came to mean a room or building where paintings and art are shown. A related form is "galleria."
