解説 Definition
「art」は名詞として「芸術」「美術」という意味を持つ。絵画、彫刻、音楽、文学など、人間の創造的な表現や技術の総称である。また、特定のスキルや技法を指して「〜の技術」という意味でも使われる。

artは古フランス語を経てラテン語ars, artem「技術・技能」に由来し、さらに「うまく合わせる」を表す語根につながります。artifactやartisanと同じく「手際よく作ること」が核です。artが「芸術」である前に「技」であったと知ると、作品に訓練の匂いがある理由が見えてきます。
