galley の原義は古フランス語 galie を経た『ガレー船』で、さらに中世ラテン語 galea にさかのぼります。galleon も近い船名の仲間です。細長い船の中で料理する場所がそのまま galley と呼ばれたので、『船や機内の調理室』の意味になりました。
Galley originally meant a long ship, from Old French galie and Medieval Latin galea. It is related to other ship names such as galleon. Because the cooking area on such ships was an important part of the vessel, galley later came to mean the kitchen on a ship, and then also on an aircraft.
