古英語 cycene に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語 cocina、ラテン語 coquina「料理場」へさかのぼります。語源の核は coquere「料理する」で、cook や cuisine と同根です。だから kitchen はもともと「料理する場所」そのものです。
Kitchen comes from Old English cycene, which goes back through Vulgar Latin to Latin coquina, meaning "cooking place." Its deeper root is coquere, "to cook," the same root seen in cook and cuisine. So the word originally meant simply the place where cooking is done.
