category は「分類したまとまり」。まず動詞 categorize（分類する）とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。catalog のように項目を整理して並べる場面を思い浮かべるとよく、product category, age category, category of books の形でよく出ます。意味は group よりも「基準に沿って分けた区分」に近いのがポイント。cat とは無関係なので、つづりの cat- に引っぱられないよう注意すると混乱しません。
