まず core は category。これに「〜化する」の -ise が付いて categorise で「分類する」、さらに -ation でその行為自体を表す名詞になります。つまり category → categorise → categorisation の流れで押さえると形と意味がつながります。実際にも the categorisation of data / products のように「何かを基準別に分けること」でよく出ます。米語は categorization、英語圏でも英国式は s を使う点だけ注意すると混乱しにくいです。

categorisation は category + -ise + -ation から成り、category はギリシャ語 katēgoria に由来し、kata-「下へ」+ agoreuein「公に語る」と分析される。もとは「言葉で言い立てること」なので、分類とは物に名と位置を与える行為だと見えてくる。categorize や agora も同根。

Category comes through Latin and French from Greek katēgoria, originally meaning a public statement or accusation, from parts meaning "down" and "to speak in public."
