規則や基準を厳しく守らせないこと、またはそのために生じる甘さやゆるみを指す語。道徳・規律・管理・取り締まりなどについて、あるべき厳しさや注意深さが欠けている状態を表し、人の態度にも制度運用にも使える。

lax を「ゆるい」と感覚でつかむと覚えやすい。relax で力が抜ける感じ、lax rules なら「緩い規則」。そこに名詞語尾 -ity が付いて「緩さという状態」＝ laxity。人の性格よりも、discipline / security / supervision など本来きちんとしているべき管理の甘さに出やすい。leniency が「寛大さ」寄りなのに対し、laxity は「締まりがないために規律がゆるむ」というマイナス感が強い。

laxity はラテン語 laxus「ゆるい」から来た lax に、性質を表す -ity が付いた語。relax や laxative も同系で、「張っていたものがゆるむ」という核を押さえると、規律の弛緩にも体のゆるみも同じ根から理解できる。
