sorting は sort に動名詞語尾 -ing が付いた形で、sort は古フランス語を経てラテン語 sors / sortiri「くじ・割り当て」に由来する。もとは「運命に応じて分ける」感覚で、assort や consort と同根だと知ると、「分類する」が「割り当てる」から来たと分かる。
