negation はラテン語 negatio に由来し、neg-「否定する」+ -ation「こと」で『否定すること』を表します。negative や abnegate も同根で、意味の芯が単なる反対ではなく『認めない・そうだと言わない』ことにあると見えてきます。
Negation comes from Latin negatio, from a root meaning "to deny" or "say no." The word first meant the act of denying or refusing to accept something as true. Related English words include negative and abnegate, which keep the same idea of refusal or denial.
