特別な混乱や異常がなく、ふだん通りの生活や秩序が保たれている状態を表す名詞。災害や病気、社会的な混乱のあとで、物事が元の落ち着いた日常へ戻ることを述べるときによく使われる。

normalcy は normal（正常な）+ 名詞語尾 -cy からできた語です。normal はラテン語 normalis「規準に従った」にさかのぼり、語源の norma は「大工の直角定規」。つまり「基準どおりの状態」から「正常」という意味になりました。関連語は norm, abnormal。
