「splicing」は splice の名詞形で、語源は中オランダ語 splissen「裂いてつなぐ」とされます。もともと縄や索を割って編み込み接合する動作を指し、ただ貼るのでなく「ほどいて組み直す」感じが核です。split や splinter が近縁です。
Splicing is the noun form of splice, which is usually traced to Middle Dutch splissen, meaning "split" or "divide." It first referred to joining rope by separating the strands and weaving them together again. Because of that history, the word keeps the sense of connecting by opening something up and reworking its parts. It is related in origin to split and splinter.
