一つのものが途中から別々の方向へ分かれていくことを表す動詞。道や川が枝分かれする場合だけでなく、考え方、方針、結果などが一致せず、次第に食い違っていく場合にも使われる。
To diverge means to separate and go in different directions from the same point. It can describe roads, ideas, plans, or opinions that stop being the same.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
converge（収束する）と対で覚えると強い語です。converge が「一点に集まる」なら、diverge はその逆で「一本だったものが外へ分かれていく」。まず道や川が二手に分かれる絵を頭に置き、そのあとで opinions diverge, interests diverge のように、意見・利害・結果がだんだん一致しなくなる使い方へ広げると定着しやすいです。単なる separate よりも、最初は近かったものが途中から食い違う感じが出ます。diverse（多様な）と形が似るので、diverge は動詞だとセットで区別すると混乱しにくいです。

「diverge」は中世ラテン語 divergere にさかのぼり、di-「離れて」+ vergere「向く・曲がる」から成る。converge や verge と同じ核をもち、「向きが別々になる」感覚から「分岐する・意見が食い違う」へ意味が伸びた。
Diverge comes from Medieval Latin divergere, built from di-, meaning "apart," and vergere, meaning "to turn" or "bend." The original image is of things turning in different directions. From there, the meaning grew into both physical branching apart and differences in opinions or paths. It is related to converge and verge.
