If two things overlap, they partly cover the same area or happen during some of the same time. The word is used for physical things, time periods, ideas, jobs, and responsibilities. It often suggests that two things are not completely separate.

overlap は over「上に越えて」+ lap「折り重なる部分」から成る語で、lap は古英語系の語です。lapel や overlapped を思うと、布の端がもう一枚にかぶさる像から「重なり合う」という意味がそのまま見えてきます。
Overlap is made from over and lap. Lap is an old English word for a part that folds over or lies on top of something else, especially like cloth. From that image of one edge covering another, the verb came to mean extending partly over the same space; compare lapel.
