lap は古英語 læppa「垂れた部分・折り重なる端」にさかのぼる語です。そこから「重なり」「ひざの上」などの意味が生まれ、競走ではコースが出発点に重なる一周を lap と呼ぶようになりました。関連語は overlap、lapping です。
