healing は heal に古英語由来の名詞化語尾 -ing が付いた語です。heal は古英語 hǣlan「癒やす・完全にする」にさかのぼり、health や whole と同じく「欠けのない状態」が核です。だから healing には、傷を治すだけでなく本来の完全さへ戻す感覚があります。
