convalescing はラテン語 convalescere「再び元気になる」にさかのぼり、con-「十分に」+ valesc-「強くなる」からできています。valid や valiant と同じ val- をもち、「弱さから力を取り戻していく途中」と見ると回復中の感じがはっきりします。
Convalescing comes from Latin convalescere, meaning "to grow strong again." It is built from con-, here giving a sense of completeness, and valescere, from a root meaning "to be strong," also seen in valid and valiant. The word came to describe the process of getting strength back after illness.
