hawker は hawk「売り歩く」+ -er「人」ですが、売る意味の hawk は hawker から逆成された語です。hawker 自体は中低地ドイツ語 höken「行商する・背負う」にさかのぼり、関連語 huckster も同系。背負って売り歩く像が、そのまま語義になりました。
