テナガザルとは、東南アジアに生息する小型の類人猿です。長い腕を使って樹上を素早く移動する腕渡り（ブラキエーション）が特徴で、大きな声で鳴くことでも知られています。

gibbonは18世紀にフランス語gibbonから英語へ入った動物名。さらにそのもとは当時のフランス領インドで使われた語に由来すると考えられるが未確定で、テナガザルという珍しい動物が外来名のままヨーロッパ語に定着した語だと分かる。
