密閉されて湿気がこもった空間で感じる、古いカビのような匂い。通気が悪くて空気が停滞し、ものや場所が新鮮さを失ったような様子にも使われる。長い間使われていない部屋や箱から漂う、じめじめした臭いを指す。

musty はラテン語 mustum「若いぶどう酒・搾りたての汁」に由来する must が核です。must や mustiness が近縁で、もとは発酵しかけの酒気を帯びた匂い。そこから湿って古びた、かび臭い感じへ広がりました。
Musty comes from must, a word from Latin mustum, meaning “new wine” or “fresh grape juice.” At first it referred to the smell of something fermenting, like young wine. Later the sense widened to the stale, damp, moldy smell we know today.
