An alley is a narrow street or path between buildings, often behind main streets. It is commonly found in cities and towns. Alleys are usually smaller and quieter than regular roads.

street が表通り、road が道一般、lane がやや細い車線・小道なのに対し、alley は「建物と建物のすき間を抜ける、裏側の狭い通路」。地図の道というより、店の横や裏にある細い抜け道を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。back alley / dark alley の形でよく出て、少し人目につかない・治安が怪しい響きもある。alleyway もほぼ同義。bowling alley は細長い通路のイメージでつなげると覚えやすい。
