reside は中英語を経て古フランス語・ラテン語 residere にさかのぼり、re-「後ろに」+ sedere「座る」から成ります。もとは「腰を据えてとどまる」で、そこから「ある場所に住む」へ意味が伸びました。関連語は residence, resident。
Reside comes from Latin residere, through French and Middle English, and originally meant "to sit back" or "remain seated." It is built from re- and sedere, "to sit." From the idea of staying settled in one place, it developed the meaning "to live somewhere." Residence and resident come from the same root.
