sojourn は古フランス語 sojorner を経て入り、さらに俗ラテン語 *subdiurnare「一日を過ごす」にさかのぼります。sub-「下で・しばらく」+ diurnus「日ごとの」が縮まり、journey・journal と同根なので、「日を送りつつしばらく滞在する」感覚が残る語です。
Sojourn came into English through Old French sojorner. It goes back to Late Latin subdiurnare, meaning roughly "to spend a day," from roots linked to "under/for a time" and "daily."
