polonium はラテン語 Polonia『ポーランド』からで、発見者キュリー夫妻が祖国名にちなみ命名した元素名です。語尾 -ium は元素名でよく使われ、radium や uranium と並べると、国名がそのまま元素名になった珍しさが見えてきます。
Polonium was named from Latin Polonia, meaning "Poland." Marie and Pierre Curie chose the name to honor Poland, Marie Curie's homeland. The ending -ium is common in element names, so the country name was shaped into a scientific form. This makes polonium unusual as an element directly named after a nation.
