plover は古フランス語 plover / pluvier を経て、ラテン語 pluvia「雨」に連なる語です。語根 pluv- は「雨」を表し、雨の季節に目立つ鳥の名だったと考えると、鳥名が天候の観察から生まれた感じが伝わります。関連語は pluvial と pluviometer です。
