ラテン語 expedire にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ ped-「足」から成ります。もともとは「足かせを外して動けるようにする」で、そこから「手早く進める」→ expeditiously「急いで」の意味になりました。関連語は expedition, impede です。
