Significance means the importance or special meaning of something. It is used when a fact, event, result, or symbol has strong value or effect. In more formal English, it can also suggest a deeper meaning.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず形で覚えると残りやすいです。significant（重要な）を知っていれば、名詞化した significance は「重要であること＝重要性」。語尾の -ance は performance, importance などと同じく「性質・状態」を作る型です。sign や signal を連想して、「はっきり目につく、見逃せないものほど significance がある」と結ぶと定着します。よくある形は of great significance、the significance of this result。importance と近いですが、significance は「意味の大きさ・影響の重さ」まで含む感じです。
