cueはフランス語queue、さらにラテン語cauda「尾」に由来し、綴りが短くなった語です。舞台では前のせりふの「しっぽ」の部分が次の人の出番の合図だったため、cueが「きっかけ・合図」になったと考えると腑に落ちます。関連語はqueue, codaです。
