覚えにくい情報を思い出しやすくするための記憶法や覚え方を指す。頭文字を並べたり、語呂合わせや韻を用いたりして、順序・名称・規則などを効率よく記憶するために使われ、学校学習や資格試験などでもよく用いられる。
A mnemonic is a memory aid, such as a word, pattern, or simple idea that helps you remember something more easily. It is often used when learning facts, spelling, lists, or other information that is hard to keep in mind.

覚える軸は2つです。まず発音は先頭の m を読まずほぼ「ネモニック」なので、つづりと音をセットで固定すると忘れにくいです。次に、これは knowledge や memory そのものではなく「覚えるための仕掛け」を指す語。mnemonic device, a mnemonic for names/dates の形で覚えると、単なる勉強法 general method ではなく、記憶を助ける具体的な工夫だと定着します。似た場面で strategy や technique よりも、暗記補助に寄った語だと意識すると使い分けしやすいです。

mnemonicはギリシャ語mnemonikos「記憶に関する」が語源で、mnēm-「記憶・思い出す」が核です。英語では-monicまで一語に見えますが、中心はあくまで「覚える力」で、だから記憶術を指します。amnesiaやMnemosyneも同じ根で、mが黙字でも記憶の語族だと分かります。
