情報を覚えやすくするための記憶の工夫や技法を指す語。頭字語、語呂合わせ、イメージ、歌やリズムなどを利用して、名前・順序・年代のような内容を整理し、長く保持しやすくし、必要なときに思い出しやすくする方法を表す。

まず中に memo が隠れていると見ると覚えやすい。mnemonics は「記憶そのもの」ではなく、「覚えるためのしかけ・技法」の集合。memory が結果、mnemonics はそこへ行くための手段だと切り分けると定着しやすい。acronyms, rhymes, images, songs などと並びやすく、use mnemonics to remember names / lists / dates の形でよく出る。つづりは m で始まるのに発音で m をほぼ出さない点にも注意。

ギリシャ語 mnēmonikos（記憶の）から。語根 mnē-（記憶する）に由来し、記憶の女神ムネモシュネ（Mnemosyne）と同根。関連語: amnesia（a-否定+mnesia＝記憶喪失）、memoir（回想録）。記憶を助ける技術や装置を指し、「忘却」のamnesiaと正反対の関係にある。
