数学や科学で使用される、テキストベースより上の小さい文字。指数や化学式の上付き添え字を表すのに用いられる。
A superscript is a letter, number, or symbol written slightly above the normal line of text. It is commonly used in math, science, footnotes, and dates.

super- は superhero などでなじみのある「上・超」の感覚、script は script で「書かれたもの」。合わせて「上に書かれた文字」と取ると意味がそのまま見えます。実際に superscript は x² や cm³ のように、本文より小さく上に載る文字のこと。対になる語は subscript で、sub- は「下」。上なら super、下なら sub と上下セットで覚えると、数式や化学式で見たときに迷いません。
`Super-` gives the idea of up or above, and `script` means writing. So `superscript` is writing placed above the normal line. Remember it together with `subscript`: `super` is up, `sub` is down.

superscript はラテン語 super-「上に」+ script「書かれたもの」からなり、script は scribere「書く」に由来します。subscribe や manuscript と同根で、「上に書き添えたもの」という原義どおり、文字の肩に小さく載る上付き文字を指すようになりました。
