意見や約束、立場をはっきり示さず、どちらとも取れるような受け答えや態度を表す形容詞。対立や責任を避けたいとき、まだ決めていないとき、あえて踏み込んだ発言を控える場面でよく使われ、話し手の慎重さや消極性を含むこともある。
Noncommittal describes someone who does not clearly express an opinion, decision, or promise. It is often used when a person wants to avoid choosing a side or giving a direct answer. This word can suggest uncertainty, caution, or unwillingness to be clear.

noncommittalは non-「否定」＋commit＋-al から成り、commit はラテン語 committere にさかのぼる。com-「ともに」＋ mittere「送る」は permit や transmit と同根で、自分を立場に送り込まない感覚が、態度をぼかす意味につながる。
Noncommittal combines non- "not" with committal, from commit. Commit goes back through Latin committere, formed from com- "together" and mittere "to send," a root also seen in permit and transmit. The idea developed from "not sending oneself into a firm position" to describing speech or behavior that avoids a clear choice or promise.
