coffer は古フランス語 coffre を経て、ラテン語 cophinus、さらにギリシャ語 kophinos（かご）にさかのぼる語です。もとは「物を入れる箱」の感覚で、財貨を納める箱から「金庫」の意味になりました。関連語に coffin があります。
